Character development at Kingsley College is foundational to everything we do. For this reason, we have returned to 30 minutes of Christian Living time each day to allow for an appropriate focus.
“Treat others as you would like them to treat you.”
In the week before school started, teachers received fresh professional development in our character development program, “Play is the Way”. The program helps us develop a consistent language and emphasis across the school. Our focus in the first part of the year has been what is commonly referred to as The Golden Rule, “Treat others as you would like them to treat you”, drawn directly from the teachings of Jesus.
Teachers have helped students think about how they like to be treated, reflect on how they are treating others, and how they will treat others in the future. Students are helped to take responsibility for the choices they have made, and feel empowered to make positive choices in the future.
When encouraging positive behaviour throughout the day, teachers might ask questions like:
- “Were you treating that person in the way you would like to be treated?”
- “Are you doing the right thing or the wrong thing?”
- “Are you making a strong decision or a weak decision?”
Using questions helps the young person reflect on what they are doing and take ownership of their choices. It also helps them shift from re-acting to what someone else has done, to acting in a way they have chosen.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year here at Kingsley College, where we will build each other up and flourish in all we do.
